...his voice conveyed his infinite love of the art,

the marvellous song of life…

There is a big difference between who wants to read a book and who wants a book to read. This is a book to read and read over again, as fast a first glance can be, as profound underlines, implications, I would say also suggestions, are. The author is the niece of an artist who has rightly become a legend, Mario Del Monaco. The last true tenor, direct descendent of that extraordinary race which starts from Caruso, in the beginning of 1900s, going through to Martinelli, Pertile, and arriving at Gigli, a preeminently popular singer, and finally triumphing in his overflowing personality. In the beginning Paola Del Monaco seems to be intimidated by the titanic figure facing her, but it is only an impression. The more one enters deeply into the reading, the more you understand that the author has grasped some aspects that a normal hagiography would neglect or without hesitation distort. How unbearable and all equal are those books dedicated to the lives and deeds of lyric singers! One could quietly exchange the name of a tenor with that of a soprano without the reader realising the least variant. “I have done this... I have done that... Ah, at my times... Ah, today young men do not study any longer...”, a tiresome refrain where the natural egocentricity of the protagonist centuplicates, until it touches lightl and overcomes the summit of grotesque. Paola avoids all that, thanks to her insight, her educated but linear writing and to a form of prudent and in any case vigilant respect. Her formation and her interests go along extremely profound dimensions, as appearing from the numerous citations of oriental philosophies: Mario Del Monaco is taken by surprise, he cannot escape from the subtle and sometimes pitiless analysis of his niece. Then all weaknesses, fragility, the ingenuousness of Otello, Sansone and Radames appears. The relationship with his wife Rina, with his fans, with the numerous women around him. Paola is critical but also understanding: certain excesses belong to the Del Monaco family DNA, convey with the form of their eyes or somatic features. The voice, does not.
Through all the book this “quid” roves, a gift of nature but also the result of a continuous, obsessive
and very meticulous study. Paola gives for granted, and she is right in my view, that Del Monaco is and remains Del Monaco, indipendently from his life, his mood, his strangeness as a superstar!
This is a book for the one who loves Del Monaco and wishes to know many of his private aspects,
looking with curiosity among vices and habits, but also addressed to the one who has never heard a single note of his exeptional voice and now, stimulated by the reading, finally desires to taste Otello conducted by Karajan, Manon Lescaut with Tebaldi, the Bolshoi film that shows an incredibile Carmen with Archipova, Andrea Chenier of Rai with Stella and Taddei in DVD, all milestones of a road that, in the kingdome of the Ephemeral, brings the true one to glory.
