Franco Cerri’s “Cerrimedioatutto” is an autobiography, no doubt about that, but my definition for it would be a mosaic of old and new emotions, since Franco revived some of his‘old’tracks, full of memories, of feelings, of joys, the colours of which have blurred with time, fitting in with that soft elegance which has always been his musical signature. Sixteen tracks which do not reveal their age, all in all; today’s and yesterday’s compositions blend together, creating a common language that dilutes its own words in an unlimited time, a kind of superb atemporality showing both the preciosity of style of the guitarist and the sophisticated inventions of the composer at the same time. It all begins with “Cerrimedio” from the eighties, with Stefano at the bass guitar, and painful memories of that broken path come to life again. Here Franco just added voices: the theme is suggested with sweetness, and it is higlighted by Stefano’s bass. This composition is simple, but it shows the elegance of the guitarist: few deep notes, sounds which do not come only from the strings, but also from the soul, turning music into a fantasy tale. A dreamlike feeling makes the listener get involved. You can actually feel in Franco’s music some sort of continuous dream, passing from a theme to the other as if imagination and reality could blend to create a distemper which discolours his life, narrating it in a hundred different hues, catching breath and turning it into sound. The chord progression and the theme of “Partnerschaft”, a song from 1960, are more complex. Here the tale unfolds also through the robust sound of wind instruments, and I would think of Freddie Green, who highlighted the dynamics of the Count Basie orchestra, but then Franco breaks free, playing in chord melody, that is, using chords and melody at the same time, drawing from the past and leading to the future. Some of the titles are reminescent of old irony: “Flay”, for instance, which was originally “Moses Ballad”, or “L’isola”‘( The Isle’), “Ciononostante sono un assiduo bagnante”‘ (Nevertheless, I’m a regular bather’), and also “Tonsambaris”, which stands for “Samba per la Ariston” ‘( Samba for the Ariston’), or “Deep in You”, which makes us rediscover the voice of Bunny Foy, singing without words but with great intensity. It appears to me that looking back to his youth is important. A Proustian sense of the search of the self is evident, almost as if he wanted to make his poetic journey explicit, getting to the present with “Foxology” or “L’attesa”, along the scale of continuous poetry, with a lexicon full of nostalgia and hope at the same time, an unpredictable way of surprising and of drawing the attention of the listener though different nuances of feelings, diluted in his quiet irony. At the end,“Framastemi”, i.e. Franco, Marion (his partner), Stefano and Nicola (his children), in a tender symbolic quartet, all wrapped up in the shining poetry of a guitar which has passed through the century of jazz, listening to the bigs, from Charlie Christian to Barney Kessel and Jim Hall, taking some splinters of sound from all of them and remodelling it into the sound and poetry of Franco Cerri.
