PRESENTAZIONE DISCO

E’ opportuna e brillante l’iniziativa di proporre in cd questa stupenda registrazione live, quaranta minuti di jazz eccellente che risalgono al 2001. Il luogo era il Jimmy’s, un locale di Milano che non c’è più, situato nel quartiere di Porta Vittoria. Non conosco le ragioni di un ritardo così lungo; non so neppure se nel frattempo il prezioso materiale abbia corso il rischio di andare perduto. Ma sono dettagli che non interessano se confrontati con la sorpresa e con il piacere dell’ascolto.

Qui ci sono solisti di alto livello come Sante Palumbo, Michael Rosen, Marco Ricci, Stefano Bagnoli. E c’è in veste di ospite Danilo Rossi, prima viola solista dell’Orchestra della Scala nonché della Filarmonica della Scala, che torna a ricordare a chi abbia buone orecchie quanto sia bello e struggente il suono di quello strumento, colpevolmente ignorato dal jazz più ancora del violoncello, che perlomeno può vantare due assi internazionali quali Jaques Morelenbaum e Tomeka Reid.

Le menzioni più ampie spettano al pianista Sante Palumbo a cui il cd è giustamente intestato, essendo Thelonious Monk uno dei suoi referenti più amati per le composizioni oltre che per la tastiera. Si noti pure la scelta dei quattro brani monkiani: 52nd Street Theme che l’autore pervase di sottile ironia ma non incise mai; Round Midnight il più celebre, un successo sicuro se interpretato bene e in piena autonomia come qui accade; infine Ruby My Dear ed Epistrophy entrambi intensi, evocativi e con pregevoli intermezzi solistici. Palumbo appartiene ormai alla “vecchia guardia” del migliore jazz italiano. Ma chi se ne intende non ignora che è anche un precursore dei jazzisti crossover o, se si preferisce, <senza confini>. Arrivò a Milano dalla nativa Puglia dopo aver studiato al Conservatorio di Foggia e conquistò gli ascoltatori più esigenti con la tecnica perfetta, le capacità espressive, l’aggiornatissimo senso del jazz e l’attitudine a cimentarsi senza problemi con la grande musica europea classica e contemporanea. E’ molto apprezzato anche come insegnante.

Comprimari quanto mai degni sono gli altri protagonisti. Il sassofonista tenore e soprano Michael Rosen è un musicista che viene dallo stato di New York, graduato presso la Berklee School of Music e poi approdato in Italia dove ha riscosso nei concerti e nei dischi consensi eccellenti. Marco Ricci è uno dei contrabbassisti italiani più richiesti per la bellezza del suono e per il vigore ritmico e melodico nell’accompagnamento e nelle sortite solistiche. Il batterista Stefano Bagnoli ha vissuto dalla nascita in una famiglia di noti jazzisti acquisendo sicurezza e precisione sull’arduo strumento, dove predilige le spazzole piuttosto che le bacchette, tanto è vero che gli americani lo chiamano “the brushman”.

SANTE PALUMBO
Sante Palumbo, nato a Cerignola, ha studiato pianoforte e composizione al Conservatorio di Foggia. Milanese di adozione sin da giovane, ha suonato con i più prestigiosi musicisti jazz del mondo fra cui Phil Woods, Charlie Mingus, Ron Carter, Tony Scott, Astor Piazzolla, Joe Venuti, Buddy Freeman, Don Sebesky; e, in Italia, con Franco Cerri, Giorgio Buratti, Lino Patruno, Tullio De Piscopo, Gorni Kramer, Enzo Ceragioli. Con Tito Fontana ha musicato le poesie di Papa Woityla, interpretate e registrate da Sara Vaughan e l’Orch. Sinfonica di Colonia diretta da Lalo Schifrin (lp “One World One Peace”). Per 30 anni solista e arrangiatore in tv Rai (fra le tante trasmissioni, Portobello di Enzo Tortora).

Musicista completo all’americana, passa con duttilità dalla classica al jazz alla c.d. musica leggera. Infatti, mentre, da un lato, ha collaborato con Maurice Chevalier, Luciano Tajoli, Claudio Villa e, più recentemente sino a oggi, con Iva Zanicchi, d’altro canto, come compositore, oltre alle colonne sonore per la Rai, ha più volte interpretato sue “Suites” e “fantasie” eseguite da orchestre sinfoniche (“Pomeriggi Musicali”, “Milano Classica” alla Sala Verdi del conservatorio di Milano) da lui stesso dirette. Fra i numerosissimi concerti, ricordiamo ”Omaggio a Gershwin”, per quartetto d’archi e quartetto jazz all’Auditorium Rai di Torino; “Omaggio a Duke Ellington” con l’Ottetto “All Stars” al Castello Sforzesco per il Comune di Milano; e “Omaggio a Piazzolla” (col quale ultimo ha collaborato discograficamente) rielaborando in modo originale le musiche di questi tre grandi compositori. Tante le tournées all’estero, fra cui Usa, Brasile, Australia. Da 40 anni docente dei corsi di perfezionamento di piano jazz, arrangiamento e orchestrazione nelle maggiori scuole di jazz (Parma, Milano, Castellanza (VA)

Sante Palumbo ha al suo attivo circa 100 LP e numerosi CD fra cui “Puccini’s Melodies” per piano e orch. d’archi; “Bach in Jazz”; e il presente “Thelonious Monk”.

MARCO RICCI
Marco Antonio Ricci esordisce in campo jazzistico al Festival di Terra del Sole di Castrocaro Terme nel 1987, nel 1990 entra a far parte della “European Jazz Orchestra of Young Talents”. Vanta numerose collaborazioni con artisti che lo portano a partecipare a prestigiose tourné e registrazioni discografiche. è membro stabile del Trio di Marco Detto dal 1992, tra i progetti di cui è leader vi è il Trio con John Stowell (insieme a Stefano Bagnoli), il Quartetto “Quadrivision” e quello con Mike Del Ferro e Massimo Manzi.

Ha all’attivo circa ottanta incisioni discografiche in progetti prevalentemente di natura jazz, con incursioni anche nella musica classica, contemporanea, d’autore, popolare ed etnica.

MICHAEL ROSEN
Michael Rosen nasce a Itacha, New York, frequenta la Berklee School of Music , dove vince una borsa di studio e si diploma Magna Cum Laude dopo appena 5 semestri. Nel 1987, si stabilisce in Italia e si esibisce in diversi e noti jazz festival, incide praticamente per tutti i principali artisti italiani e svizzeri. Attivissimo nella scena jazz europea è stimato anche dai colleghi della musica classica, infatti spesso è chiamato per alcuni concerti dell’Orchestra della Scala.

STEFANO BAGNOLI
Con un’esperienza jazzistica consolidata da oltre trent’anni di attività, vanta collaborazioni artistiche a livello nazionale e internazionale. E’ leader, dal 2012, di un proprio trio (We Kids Trio) formato assieme a due giovani talenti siciliani Francesco Patti e Giuseppe Cucchiara.

Imponente la discografia che dal 1978 ad oggi lo vede affiancato a grandi artisti, sia attuali che storici.

DANILO ROSSI
A soli vent’anni viene scelto da Riccardo Muti a ricoprire il ruolo che ancora oggi ricopre, di Prima Viola Solista dell’Orchestra del Teatro alla Scala e della Filarmonica della Scala, divenendo la più giovane prima viola nella storia del prestigioso Teatro milanese.

Artista di vasta e varia esperienza musicale, ha collaborato con numerosi jazzisti.

PRESENTATION

Here is a welcome and brilliant idea, to put on a CD this wonderful live recording, forty minutes of outstanding jazz from 2001. The venue was Jimmy’s, a now defunct Milanese joint in the Porta Vittoria area. I ignore the reasons for such a long wait; I do not either know whether in the meanwhile this precious material was running the risk of being lost. However, these are details, which cannot detract from the surprise and the pleasure of listening to it.

Here we find top soloists as Sante Palumbo, Michael Rosen, Marco Ricci, Stefano Bagnoli. And there is also the guest star Danilo Rossi, first solo viola of the La Scala Orchestra and Philarmonic Orchestra, helping anyone with a fine ear to remember how beautiful and tormenting is the sound of the viola, unjustly ignored by jazz music even more than the cello, which is anyway supported by top-notch players as Jaques Morelenbaum and Tomeka Reid.

Pianist Sante Palumbo, after which the CD is rightly named, deserves the most attention, Thelonious Monk being one of his most beloved inspirers for his compositions as well as for his keyboard. His choice of Monk’s pieces is remarkable: 52nd Street Theme, which the author filled with subtle irony, but never got to actual recording; Round Midnight, the most famous track, a certain success if well interpreted in full autonomy, as it is the case here; lastly, Ruby My Dear and Epistrophy, both intense, evocative tracks with nice solo intermezzoes. Palumbo belongs to the “old school” of the best Italian jazz. But the connoisseurs will not forget that he is also a forerunner of crossover jazz or, if you like it, <boundaryless> jazz. He arrived in Milan from his native Apulia after having attended the Conservatory in Foggia and he gained the esteem of the the most demanding audience with his perfect technique, his expressive skills, his up-to-date sense of jazz and his attitude to engage easily in the great classical and contemporary European music. He is also much appreciated as a teacher.

The co-stars in this recording live up to the occasion. The tenor and soprano saxophonist Michael Rosen, a New Yorker who Graduated from the Berklee School of Music and then moved to Italy, where he received high appraisals for his concerts and records. Marco Ricci is one of the most demanded contrabassists in the country for the beauty of his sound and for his rhythmic and melodic strength both in accompaniment and in solo. Drummer Stefano Bagnoli grew up in a family of jazz musicians, and prefers brushes to drumsticks, which is the reason why Americans nicknamed him “the brushman”.

SANTE PALUMBO
Sante Palumbo, born in Cerignola, studied piano and composition at the Conservatory in Foggia. Having lived in Milan since his youth, he played with the most renowned jazz players in the world, including Phil Woods, Charlie Mingus, Ron Carter, Tony Scott, Astor Piazzolla, Joe Venuti, Buddy Freeman, Don Sebesky; and, in Italy, with Franco Cerri, Giorgio Buratti, Lino Patruno, Tullio De Piscopo, Gorni Kramer, Enzo Ceragioli. With Tito Fontana he set to music Pope Wojtyla’s poems, which were interpreted and recorded by Sara Vaughan and the Cologne Symphonic Orchestra, directed by (in the LP “One World One Peace”). He has also been a soloist and arranger for RAI tv for thirty years (among his many shows, Portobello with Enzo Tortora).

An American-style all-around musician, he moves with flexibility from classical to jazz to the so-called pop music. As such, he worked with Maurice Chevalier, Luciano Tajoli, Claudio Villa and more recently, until today, with Iva Zanicchi, but also, as a composer, he interpreted on several occasions his own ‘suites’ and ‘fantasies’ performed by symphonic orchestras (“Pomeriggi Musicali”, “Milano Classica” at the Verdi Hall of the Milan Conservatory) he himself directed, besides the soundtracks for RAI tv. Among his countless concerts, we may cite “Homage to Gershwin”, for string quartet and jazz quartet at the RAI Auditorium in Turin; “Homage to Duke Ellington” with the “All Stars” octet at the Sforza Castle, for the City of Milan; and “Homage to Piazzolla” (with whom he worked on some records), revising in an original way the music of these three great composers. He frequently toured abroad, including the USA, Brazil, Australia. He has taught for forty years advanced classes in jazz piano, arrangement and orchestration in the most important jazz academies (Parma, Milano, Castellanza).

Sante Palumbo recorded about 100 LPs and many CDs, among which are “Puccini’s Melodies” for piano and string orchestra; “Bach in Jazz”; and the present work, “Thelonious Monk”.

MARCO RICCI
Marco Antonio Ricci debuted at the Terra del Sole Festival in Castrocaro Terme in 1987, and in 1990 he joined the “European Jazz Orchestra of Young Talents”. He worked with many artists, participating in prestigious tours and recordings. He has been a permanent member of the Marco Detto Trio since 1992, and he has a leading role in the Trio with John Stowell (and Stefano Bagnoli), the “Quadrivision” quartet and that with Mike Del Ferro and Massimo Manzi, among others.

He performed in about eighty recordings, mostly within jazz projects, with an occasional foray into classical, contemporary, auteur and ethnic music.

MICHAEL ROSEN
Michael Rosen was born in Ithaca, NY, and attended the Berklee School of Music, where he obtained a scholarship and graduated magna cum laude after only five terms. In 1987, he moved to Italy and performs in several renowned jazz festivals, also recording for virtually all the major Italian and Swiss artists. Very active in the European jazz scene, he is held in esteem also by his colleagues in classical music, and he often performs in concerts with the La Scala orchestra.

STEFANO BAGNOLI
With a solid experience in jazz music after more than thirty years of work, he performed with several other national and international artists. He is the leader of his own trio (We Kids Trio), estabilished in 2012 with two young talents from Sicily, Francesco Patti and Giuseppe Cucchiara.

His massive discographic output, starting in 1978, involved the cooperation of many great artists of the present and of the past.

DANILO ROSSI
He was chosen by Riccardo Muti at the age of twenty for the position he still holds, i.e. First Solo Viola in the La Scala Orchestra and Philarmonic Orchestra, becoming the youngest first viola in the history of the prestigious Milan theatre.

He is an artist with a vast and varied musical experience, and he worked with several jazz players.
